Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening

A one-on-one interview to review your medical and dental history. This is a great time to share any particular needs or concerns you may have related to dentistry.  Intra oral exam, which includes a soft tissue exam (Oral Cancer Screening*) –no video, but I have added a picture of Identafi –a device to screen for oral cancer – and detection of tooth decay, wear and fractures. We will also assess the function and alignment of teeth for indications of the potential need for orthodontics as well as the replacement of missing teeth.

Periodontal exam to detect periodontal disease. The examination and probing* (Video 9 . GINGIVAL PROBING AND POCKET DEPTH) of gum help to identify the overall state of the gum and the bone support. This information is important to determine the type and extent of the cleaning you need, as well as the frequency.

We will also take any necessary radiographs, which may include a full series of x-rays, as well as a panoramic radiograph.  The radiographic exam will give us a full view of teeth and jaw for the most comprehensive examination.

We may take intraoral photos depending on your needs and general oral health. This is done with a small wand that contains a camera. These photos are useful to better determine what is happening in your mouth.  They are also helpful to the patients in understanding their dental conditions and needs. Additional photos may also be taken if there are specific esthetic issues or concerns.

Once treatment needs are determined we will discuss the findings with you. Occasionally, we will reschedule you for a consult if time is needed for a thoughtful review of the findings from your exam. The consult is to discuss the exam findings and treatment recommendations. We will also give recommendations for continuing care. We will then reserve time in the hygiene program specific to your needs.

Because the signs and symptoms of oral cancer are often missed by the naked eye, Dr Wang has acquired the technology to detect oral cancer earlier. Our new, state-of-the-art Identafi® system allows us to more effectively identify biochemical and morphological changes in cells of the mouth, throat, tongue and tonsils.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, close to 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. Oral cancer will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day.

The main reason for these grim statistics, is not because oral cancer is hard to diagnose, but because it is diagnosed too late – when it is in its advanced stages. As your dentist, I am dedicating myself to do everything that I possibly can to reduce these alarming oral cancer statistics one patient at a time.

That’s why I recently invested in a new, advanced screening device that will enable me to perform a detailed oral exam on my adult patients with far more accuracy than I ever could in the past.

The device, which is called Identafi®, is about the size of a power tooth brush, and uses three different wavelengths of light to help detect any suspicious areas in the mouth that would be impossible for us to see with our naked eyes. These suspicious areas, upon further evaluation, are usually benign, but I think you’ll agree that it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
